6 things you didn’t know you could put in the dishwasher

There’s no denying that having a dishwasher makes housework that little bit easier! But did you know that washing dishes isn’t the only thing this miracle appliance can help you with?

Well, here we have 6 household items that you can actually use your dishwasher to clean! Who knew the dishwasher could get even better!


Cooker hood mesh filters

As these filters collect grease residue from cooking, they are expected to get grimy over time. Instead of scrubbing tirelessly to remove the grease, you can pop them in your dishwasher plate rack for a deep clean. If there are any particularly stubborn grease deposits, giving them a quick scrub before adding to the dishwasher can also help with the process.

Toys can get very grubby and need a clean every so often. Place plastic toys on the top rack of the dishwasher and get rid of dirt and stains. Be sure not to wash toys with very small pieces though as they could break off and damage your appliance. And of course, this process cannot be used for battery powered toys.

The large glass turntable in the microwave is subjected to a lot of food splatters and spills. Before washing in the dishwasher, check in the manufacturer’s manual that the turntable is dishwasher safe. Also make sure the turntable is completely cooled before adding to the dishwasher and then place on the bottom rack carefully.

Get plastic combs and hairbrushes cleaned with ease in the dishwasher by placing in the cutlery basket or tray. Remember to remove hair beforehand as this could clog up the dishwasher filter. Also, be sure not to include any brushes with wooden handles or natural bristles.

If you think about it, light switches are used everyday so they could do with a spruce up every now and again. Remove them and put the screws in a safe place, then pop them in the dishwasher for cleaning. Before reattaching, make sure the covers are completely dry.

Did you know washing a baseball cap in the dishwasher is supposed to fair better than doing so in the washing machine! Use a baseball cap washer insert, to help keep its shape and place it on the top rack. For extra support, place the back strap around one of the pegs on the rack. Use a a delicate low heat cycle and set it to not dry or use cold water if you have these options. Be sure not to use detergents with bleach or added scents as this may damage the item.

Fridges should be cleaned regularly and placing glass and plastic shelves and drawers in the dishwasher can help get your fridge gleaming. Make sure the items are dishwasher safe by referring to the manufacturer’s manual. Remove any stubborn food residue beforehand and place carefully in the dishwasher. If they don’t fit, don’t try and just add them in, as you might damage them.

Remember that if you are unsure if an item is dishwasher safe, refer to its manual or packaging.
