How To Improve Your Gardening Skills

According to research, 41 is the average age that Britons get into gardening. So why aren’t we getting out in the garden sooner?

There are so many reasons to start getting involved with gardening. Firstly it’s a great way to get active and enjoy the fresh air, getting your muscles moving and keeping you fit and healthy. Read our blog on why gardening is good for your health here. It also allows you to get creative and enhance your design skills, sometimes resulting in adding value to your home (some experts say you can see as much as a 20% rise in your property with a well-maintained garden). You can also start to grow your own produce e.g. tomatoes and herbs in your garden, helping you create some tasty dishes from the results of your gardening. Here are a few tips to help you get started.

Be Realistic

When you decide you want to get out there and try to sort your garden out, don’t envision your garden to look like one out of the Chelsea Garden show. They take months of planning and cost a small fortune. Instead, take small bits of inspiration from the gardens and scale it down to suit your own space. Shows like this can help give you inspiration and ideas for your own spaces.

Create An Idea

Decide what you want to achieve with your garden. Do you want a herb garden, flower garden or to landscape it? Having an idea of what you want to do will allow you to create a plan, instead of going in all guns blazing. Start to draw out the plans for your garden to enable you to visualise and plan the space accordingly.

Do Your Research

Find out the conditions of your garden and then research what type of plants grow best. This will enable you to make the most out of your garden’s conditions. Also, consider how high/low maintenance you want your garden to be. This will dictate the type of plants you chose. Nearly a fifth of gardeners say they research how to tackle jobs in the garden online while 10% worryingly make it up as they go along. Research is an important part of gardening.

Get Advice

When starting out gardening, it can seem daunting as there are so many things to learn and consider. When you are shopping in a garden centre, ask the staff for help and advice. They will have a lot of experience and knowledge and will be more than willing to help you out. Alternatively get online. There are thousands of websites which will provide you with gardening information, tips and advice. If you have a small garden, we have some ideas to make the most out of your space.

Get The Tools

15% say their gardens have suffered due to unreliable garden equipment.  Make sure you know what tools you need and that they are in good condition. When starting out you will only need a select few tools, but then the more you get out in the garden, the more you can invest in equipment.

Track Your Progress

If you start planting early in the year, make a note of what you have planted so you know when to expect your plants to bloom. This will also help you when watering your garden. You can also use this notepad to list any plants you see out and about that you want to implement into your garden.
