Having a dishwasher makes light work of washing dishes, giving more time in the day for other tasks. They are also convenient as they not only wash dishes but dry them too, so job done with minimal effort! However, the dishwasher can also be put to use washing other household items and accessories, not just dishes. Find out more about just some of the items you might never have thought of washing in the dishwasher.
Cooker hood mesh filters
As these filters collect grease residue from cooking, they are expected to get grimy over time. Instead of scrubbing tirelessly to remove the grease, you can pop them in your dishwasher plate rack for a deep clean. If there are any particularly stubborn grease deposits, giving them a quick scrub before adding to the dishwasher can also help with the process.
Plastic kids toys / pet toys
Toys can get very grubby and need a clean every so often. Place plastic toys on the top rack of the dishwasher and don’t wash toys with very small pieces, as they could break off and damage your appliance. It’s also very important to note that the dishwasher can’t be used for battery powered toys.
The large glass turntable in the microwave is subjected to a lot of food splatters and spills. Before washing in the dishwasher, check in the manufacturer’s manual that the turntable is dishwasher safe. Also make sure the turntable is completely cooled before adding to the dishwasher and then place on the bottom rack carefully.
Plastic hairbrushes and combs
Get plastic combs and hairbrushes cleaned with ease in the dishwasher, by placing in the cutlery basket or tray. Remember to remove hair beforehand as this could clog up the dishwasher filter. Also don’t include any brushes with wooden handles or natural bristles.
Light switch covers
Not cleaned regularly but as light switches are used everyday, they could do with a spruce up at least once a year. Remove them and put the screws in a safe place. Pop them in the dishwasher for cleaning and before reattaching make sure the covers are completely dry.
A baseball cap is supposed to fair better in the dishwasher than the washing machine! You can also use a baseball cap washer insert, to help keep its shape. Place on the top rack, on a delicate low heat cycle and if there are no drying/cold water options use them. Also don’t use detergents with bleach or added scents and for extra support place the back strap around one of the pegs on the rack.
Fridges should be cleaned regularly and placing glass and plastic shelves / drawers in the dishwasher can help get your fridge gleaming. Make sure the items are dishwasher safe by referring to the manufacturer’s manual. Remove any stubborn food residue beforehand and place carefully in the dishwasher. If they don’t fit don’t try and just add them in, as you might damage them.
Remember that if you are unsure if an item is dishwasher safe, refer to its manual or packaging. Different manufacturers use different dishwasher safe symbols so be aware that they are not all the same. If in doubt don’t place your item in the dishwasher, wash by hand instead.
