How To Make The Perfect Pancake?

Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday to use its proper title, is only a few days away so now is the perfect time to make sure you have all the kitchen equipment you need to impress the whole family with your pancake making skills. This post includes all the information you need for pancake success including a basic pancake recipe, a guide to the best tools for the job and a few suggested toppings!
Pancake Day is on February 12th so there is still time for the more adventurous to experiment with different flavour combinations to give this year’s pancakes an extra special twist. However, before you can get creative with your toppings you need to get to grips with the basics. To make a delicious batch of pancakes you will need the following ingredients:
- Butter
- Eggs (x 2)
- Flour (110g)
- Milk (200ml)
- Water (75ml)
The following steps show you how to make the perfect pancake batter and we’ve included details of any kitchen utensils you need.
1. Start By Weighing Out The Plain Flour
You will need to measure out exactly 110 grams, so using a reliable set of kitchen scales is recommended. On the BuySpares websites we have a range of kitchen scales to choose from. Personally, I find mechanical scales there the easiest to use as they have a large bowl, which it is easy to pour the flour into without spilling any.
2. Remove Any Lumps
You will need to sift the flour in to a mixing bowl to get rid of any lumps before you get started combining the ingredients. In order to do this you will need to pass the plain flour through a fine sieve.
3. Add The Other Ingredients
Start by mixing the water and milk together in a measuring jug before creating a well in the flour and cracking in the eggs. Begin to combine the egg and flour together and then slowly add the milk mixture. Continue to whisk the ingredients together until you are left with a thin batter mixture. It is best to combine the ingredients by hand using a balloon whisk.
4. Prepare The Pan
Melt some of the butter in a frying pan or specialised pancake pan (if you have one). Then ladle in around 2tbsp of the batter mix and swirl around the pan until it forms a pancake. When one side has cooked simply flip the pancake over to finish or if you prefer give it your best toss.
5. Top, Serve and Enjoy
If you’re a traditionalist then you will probably be enjoying your pancakes with just a squeeze of lemon and a light dusting of sugar – and there’s nothing wrong with that! However, the topping possibilities are endless for the more ambitious. Below are a few toppings to try:
- Maple Syrup
- Ice cream and fresh fruit
- Melted chocolate (White Toblerone is good)
Or, for a real twist you could even try a savoury pancake.
If you’re busy experimenting then you’ll probably find that you have some lemons leftover after Pancake Day. Our earlier post, “What to Do With Your Leftover Lemons“, shows how you can put these to good use around the home. We also have a range of hob cleaning care products to help you make light work of any spills, splashes and burnt-on batter.

Great tips – I think Nutella chocolate spread has to be my favourite topping though.
