If you’re not overly fond of map reading and your sense of direction often leads you astray then a Sat Nav system is something for you. They are great for helping you find your way, but there are a few things to be aware of when it comes to using, updating and protecting your Sat Nav.
1. Be Security Aware
You’re not the only one who likes Sat Navs, thieves like them too. If your satellite navigation system is detachable always remember to take it out when you leave the car. Don’t take the risk, most Sat Nav systems are light-weight and can easily be carried in a handbag.
2. Never Let Thieves Know You Have a Sat Nav
It is common knowledge that when people remove their Sat Nav from display they tend to keep them in the car. Make sure you clean away any mount or suction cap marks so you don’t attract opportunist thieves.
3. Fix Your Sat Nav in a Sensible Place
Never position the Sat Nav in your line of sight or where it leaves a blind spot. Remember, your Sat Nav can ‘speak’ so listen to it rather than look at the screen -especially when the roads are busy.
4. Keep it Updated
Make sure you are getting the best possible performance from your Sat Nav by keeping it up to date. Regular updates will ensure you know all the details like new roads and one way systems etc…
5. Beat the Burglar
Don’t program your Sat Nav to your home address. If you’ve gone out for the day and someone steals your car from the car park they can use your Sat Nav to locate your house and burgle you while you’re out. Don’t give them the opportunity, use somewhere else in your locality instead.

As daft as it sounds I always forget to take my in car charger with me, and it always dies on me before I get to my destination. I’ve learnt the hard way, and now always double check I have it before leaving the house.

You can update your sat nav as often as you like, but it’s a good idea to do it at least once a year due to changes in the roads etc.
