Been bought a new toaster as a gift? Wanted to upgrade to a better model of fridge?  Old oven simply given up the ghost? If you’re lucky enough to have a brand spanking new appliance, you might be stumped as to how to get rid of your old one.

But no matter the condition of your old appliance there are options out there for you to dispose of it responsibly and without hassle.

Sell Online

If your appliance has outgrown its usefulness but still works, you can sell it on online marketplaces and make some money. Be sure to accurately describe the condition of your appliance, to avoid an unhappy buyer. If you receive bad feedback it could be harder for you to sell other items in future.

Online marketplaces are also handy if you’re looking to buy a second hand appliance. You can get yourself a bargain and search by your area too so you don’t have to travel a long distance to pick your item up.

Give Away

If you think selling your old appliance online is more trouble than it’s worth, giving it away is another option. Old appliances that are still working can easily be given a new home and you’ll be doing a good dead in the bargain. Donate your appliance to a charity, put it up for free collection online or just give it to a friend or relative that you know would have a use for it. If you know someone who is especially good at repairs they may even be happy to take a faulty appliance off your hands.

Re-gift

If you have an appliance you know you’ll never use that you’ve won in a raffle, or been given as a gift, you can always give it away to someone else who would love it. But re-gift with caution! Either come clean from the start or make sure the person who gave you a present doesn’t see that you’ve given it a new home to avoid hurt feelings.

Recycle

Don’t let your old appliance go on the scrap heap to be burnt or broken down with acid. There are parts in all appliances that will still have value if the appliance is broken down properly in a recycling plant. To recycle responsibly, take your appliance to your local recycling centre or use the recycling scheme the retailer who sells you your new appliance legally has to provide.

Consider Repairing Instead

If you want to get rid of your appliance because it’s faulty, repairing it instead could be a better option for both the environment and your bank balance. The right spare part (which you can find using your appliance model number), some specialty cleaning products and maybe a touch up with some appliance paint could be all your appliance needs to make it like new. You can hire a repairs person, but if you’re the DIY type a quick internet search will most likely shed some light on why your appliance isn’t running. Then you can diagnose and fix it yourself.
